The Questions that changed Physics
Join the University of Southampton Physics Society (Physoc) team and meet physicists whose curiosity transformed our understanding of the universe: Isaac Newton, Michael Faraday, Marie Curie, and Henrietta Swan Leavitt.
Take part to experiments, and explore demonstrations inspired by each scientist's discoveries:
Explore gravity and motion by rolling marbles around a "gravity well" inspired by Isaac Newton's laws, discovering how orbits and falling objects follow the same rules.
Generate electricity using a magnet and coil in a Michael Faraday induction activity, seeing how moving magnetic fields create electric currents.
Reveal radiation through Marie Curie's work, modelling radioactivity using dice.
Learn from Henrietta Swan Leavitt how variable stars allow astronomers to calculate the distances to galaxies, and create your own galaxy art.
You will discover how simple questions can lead to scientific breakthroughs, and be encouraged to ask your own: What are you curious about?
The University of Southampton Physics Society (Physoc) is a student-led group within the School of Physics and Astronomy, dedicated to supporting physics students and encouraging a vibrant academic and social community. The society runs talks, mentoring schemes, outreach programmes, sports events, and social activities that help students make the most of their time at university.
