Environmental scientists struggle to communicate research findings to the public in an effective and understandable fashion. This happens for a range of reasons, including the dominance of "the economy" over "the environment", "fake news," industry greenwashing, political apathy, populist rhetoric, inequalities, and scientists' inability to capture the public's attention with their standard communication methods. However, when scientists work with young people and artists, magic can happen!

Join Ian Williams, Professor of Applied Environmental Science in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton, for this workshop that will showcase two research projects - "TRACE" and "Tidelines". These are award-winning, innovative, multi-media, multi-stakeholder, cultural collaborations between scientists, local schools, and professional artists. The projects aimed to promote solutions to environmental problems with a focus on "giving a voice" to young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The workshop will include short presentations on each project, videos that show the amazing work of the children involved in each projects, interactive question and answer sessions, and will provide an opportunity to get involved in future.
