Mud, Microscopes, and Measuring the Unmeasurable
Hidden beneath and between each tide lies a world wholly unto itself; an exciting frontier for the world of science, and home to some of the most under-rated organisms on Earth.
Join our ocean scientists as we get stuck into the largest ecosystem on the planet - Mud! Covering 70% of the planet, seafloor sediments are diverse, dynamic ecosystems that actually help to regulate Earth's climate! Sediments store carbon, but are also changing as our oceans warm, with microscopic seafloor animals needing to adapt to these changes. Together, we'll investigate how critters move and recycle material and explore how scientists can measure the movement of important elements at the seafloor. Get your hands dirty by taking actual samples and performing live experiments on local seafloor mud, and come face to face with seafloor residents from one of the coldest parts of the planet!
