The science behind Egyptian pottery
The Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton will introduce you to the science and craftsmanship behind ancient Egyptian pottery, showing how people thousands of years ago shaped clay into the vessels and objects that filled their homes, workshops, and temples.
You will explore how ancient potters selected their materials, formed their pots, and used simple technologies to fire and finish their creations. Through friendly demonstrations and clear explanations, you will discover how archaeologists study pottery today to understand everyday life in ancient Egypt.
You will also have the chance to make your own small piece of Egyptian‑style pottery using safe, easy‑to‑handle materials. This hands‑on activity is suitable for ages 4+ and designed so you can take part at your own pace.
By taking part, you will learn:
-How ancient Egyptians made pottery and why it mattered
-What scientific techniques reveal about pottery production
-How to shape and decorate your own pottery inspired by ancient methods
You will leave with new knowledge, new skills, and your own handmade creation to take home.
