Scientific approaches to archaeology and archaeological landscapes embrace a number of different techniques.
Archaeologists use these to map sites and landscapes, creating records of standing remains and earthworks, remotely sensing buried archaeology in the form of parchmarks or cropmarks, or measuring the presence of buried archaeological features using geophysical survey techniques.
The Department of Archaeology at University of Southampton uses these methods as part of their research into past landscapes. In this activity we will introduce you to some of the different methods, the science behind each technique, and the kinds of results we get from such work.
Join us (for two sessions) to see the results of some of our research projects in Britain and abroad, from Old Sarum in Wiltshire, to the site and landscape of Portus, the Imperial port of Rome, in Italy. We recommend coming along to both to get the full picture!
10th March:
This session will tell you all about the different survey and geophysical techniques used by archaeologists to explore sites and landscapes. From GPS and LiDAR to magnetometry and radar, it will show you how scientific methods shape the research we do.
11th March
This session will show you how we have applied different survey methods to various case studies of sites and landscapes, drawing on 20 years of fieldwork conducted by the Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton, and looking in particular at the landscapes of Isola Sacra, near Ostia Antica in Italy, and Old Sarum in Wiltshire.
This event will take place in Blackboard Collaborate, don't forget to book your tickets!
