SOTSEF runs during British Science Week run by the British Science Association. This year's citizen science project partner is The Plastic Tide. As a University based on the South Coast, plastic waste is an issue that is close to our heart so we're striving to make SOTSEF 2018 as low plastic as possible.

There are a number of different initiatives we are running throughout the festival to help us reduce plastic waste. Find out more below:

You: Yes, you can help us to reduce the amount of plastic waste we produce at SOTSEF! Bring along your own water bottles and coffee cups - there will be free water refill stations available across both campuses and hot drinks will be discounted for anyone who brings a reusable cup.

Awareness: We are raising awareness of the issue by hosting a number of activities, workshops and talk on the issue of plastic waste. If you're interested in finding out more about the scale of the issue Science & Engineering Day is a great place to start.

Exhibitors: All exhibitors have been asked to consider the use of single-use plastic in their activities. We know that you all love free pens and bags of goodies but unfortunately a lot of those items eventually end up in land-fill. This year we're asking our exhibitors to think of more environmentally friendly alternatives.

If attending SOTSEF encourages you to do more on this issue why not get involved in a local beach clean? 'Surfers Against Sewage' regularly organise them - keep an eye on their website for further information.
