When is Science and Engineering Day in 2019?

Science and Engineering Day 2019 will be taking place on Saturday 16th March.

What about other events in the Southampton Science and Engineering Festival?

Wider Festival events are running between 8 and 15 March - take a look at the Festival Events and Timetable pages to see what's on.

How do I get to the Festival?

Help! I've never been to Science & Engineering Day before

There is a lot to see and do, so you might want to use the website to plan your day. All the activities have a building/googlemap link to show where they are, and you can pick up a printed map from one of our welcome desks on arrival.

Regular visitors tell us that it helps to make a rough list of the top activities you want to see, but they also tell us it's easy to get distracted and spend half the day just exploring! It is just about possible to see everything in one full day but that would be ambitious, especially if you're with children or have limited mobility.

Two things to be aware of: 1) We deliberately spread activities out across the two campuses to avoid any one area getting too crowded; and 2) There is a free shuttle-bus looping between sites all day, so it's easy to get to activities on either site and if you don't want to use the bus, the sites are only 5-10 minutes' walk apart.

Why do I have to book tickets for Science & Engineering Day if its free?

Having a good indication of how many people are coming helps us with planning so that we can give our visitors the best experience on the day.

Do I have to pre-book for activities at Science & Engineering Day?

A few of our most popular shows have ticketing - so we can manage numbers across the day for a great visitor experience. In those cases, we are releasing a proportion of tickets in advance (go to 'quick booking links') but we will keep the remaining tickets for release on the day.

I want to see a particular show but all the tickets have gone.

Additional tickets for all shows will be available on the day, on a first-come-first-served basis. Go direct to the venue (see location link on the activity description) where one of our festival team will help you with tickets.

Is Science & Engineering Day really suitable for all ages?

Yes, we have activities that will entertain everyone from infants to adults. You can check the 'suitable for' information for each activity to check more closely about this.

Are there any similar events that I can take my family to?

The University organises a number of family-friendly events. Our annual Human Worlds Festival takes place in November. To find out more follow us on Twitter @UoS_Engagement, on Facebook @UoSEngagement or request to join our mailing list by emailing festival@soton.ac.uk.

Will I be able to purchase food/drinks while I'm at Science & Engineering Day?

Yes you will - various cafes and food outlets on and near campus will be open, plus there is a CoOp convenience store on Burgess Road next to campus. Campus outlets will be marked on the map which you can pick up on the day from one of our Welcome desks.
